Come On Down, For The New Cooking Merit Badge

Until December 31, 2014, Scouts starting Cooking merit badge may use these requirements, or the previous requirements which these replaced.

This is an exception to the general rule. Normally, Scouts starting a merit badge after new requirements are issued must use only the new requirements. The following is a paraphrase of the announcement made by the BSA Advancement Team Leader in October, 2013:

Since the new Cooking MB requirements were released on December 17, 2013, and the pamphlet is coming out after the start of the new year, BSA decided to allow Scouts all of 2014 to make the transition. BSA will treat this as if the pamphlet and new requirements will have come out after January, which would make the requirements effective Jan 1, 2015. Throughout 2014 Scouts will have those options of continuing or beginning with the old requirements or beginning with the new requirements. Then on Jan 1, 2015, any Scout beginning work on Cooking MB must use the new requirements and the new pamphlet.

You will need to sign up for 5 merit badges and rank them in order of preference. You will be slotted into 3 of them. There will be sign up sheets available at this week’s meeting. PLEASE DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO SIGN UP FOR THIS TRIP/MERIT BADGES. This trip takes a lot of coordination and I need all the time I can get 🙂 .

Scouts Needed to MC Campfire

I need 2 Scouts that are currently working on their Communications merit badge or will be working on it prior to this trip who would like to be the MC for the Saturday Campfire Program and head up the Sunday Scouts Own Service. Please let me know if you are interested – first come first served.

Adults

On Saturday night we have a family campfire program. This gives you a chance to see what the scouts have worked on over the weekend, see them perform and have some social time with them and other parents. The program starts at 7:30pm. We ask that you arrive between 6:30 and 7:15 (at the latest) and bring a snack/dessert to share. We are generally done and cleaned up by 9:30pm. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Ski Roundtop Weekend 2/7–2/9/2014

Skiing/Snowboarding Weekend Trip

Roundtop Mountain Resort, Lewisberry, PA

The plan is to ski/board at Roundtop all day Saturday. Due to Cabin Size, trip is limited to 20 scouts, so get signed up ASAP. We expect this trip to fill up fast. We have room reserved for adult. Cabin is heated, with hot showers, nice fireplace, kitchen, you’ll love it.

2015 Philmont Scout Ranch Expedition Info

Troop 899 has received a 2015 Philmont Scout Ranch Expedition for two (2) crews! Our arrival date at Philmont is July 22, 2015 and we depart August 3, 2015. Each crew will be 7 – 12 participants, scouts and adults. Please see the attached information sheet and permission slip for details. Please read both documents in their entirety. Lisa Murdock will be available for Q&A at the next two meetings: Thursday, December 12th (scout party) and Thursday, December 19th (COH). She will be available during the scout party on the 12th, and before and after the COH on the 19th. All interested scouts and adults should see her at one of these meetings. Lisa plans to hold a specific Q&A meeting with slide show in early January 2014. More information will be provided at a later date.

Gerber (the knife not the baby food) Knife Contest

In March, Troop 899 will hold a drawing for a survival knife made available through the generosity of Mr. Charles McDaniel, the Troop’s very first Eagle Scout.

RULES
For every hour of service performed between now and March 26th, you will receive one “chance,” so three hours equals three chances to win. The more hours of service, the better your odds of winning.

GUIDELINES
1) Any service opportunity the Troop offers will count
2) Any service opportunity OUTSIDE the Troop service activities counts, if you check with me before you perform the service to make sure it qualifies for the contest.

My hope is to inspire you to look for service opportunities and not just wait to be asked to serve. Once you start your quest for service I’m sure you’ll agree the real reward is the satisfaction you get from helping other people.

Have fun doing what scouts do best “Help other people at ALL times.”
