Medical Forms NEW INFORMATION PLEASE READ

It is that time of year to update medical forms. The vast majority of our troop still has forms that are considered “current”, but please start thinking about the timing of any necessary physicals. Here are the requirements:
The BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (“AHMR”) is the only acceptable format to be used, and it must be the current form. It will say “2014 Printing” on the bottom right corner, and it is attached to this email. Most of you used this form last year. Some of you simply update old forms from prior years on your computer. Please replace those formats with the new one. (Sorry)
The AHMR is comprised of Parts A, B and C. Everyone must complete Parts A and B, and they are completed by parents (no physical necessary). Part C requires a physical exam and doctor’s certification. Part C is required for all activities exceeding 72 hours, which include Ockanickon summer camp and Philmont, obviously. Even if you or your scout does not plan to attend either, BSA still encourages all scouts to complete Part C – just in case an opportunity arises, and for general health 🙂
The forms are good through the end of the 12th month following the date they were completed. For example, if the forms were dated June 4, 2014, they are good through June 30, 2015.
If you are going to Philmont, your forms must be good through August 31, 2015, because your trek stretches into August. Also, take Part D to your doctor’s appointment. While there is no signature line on Part D, it is referenced in Part C, and your doctor should be aware of the Philmont requirements. (Form attached.)
If you plan to play high school sports and need a physical, I’ve been told that the physical must be completed afterJune 7, 2015 (HCPS anyway). As you can see, if you are attending summer camp, and playing a HS sport, and going to Philmont – plan your physical accordingly.
Ockanickon and Philmont will not accept physical forms other than the BSA AHMR. So, if you are getting a physical for other purposes, too, please take the BSA form with you to your doctor’s appointment. Other program formats are not acceptable.
Please complete the forms in their entirety. The BSA programs will pay particular attention to signatures and dates (please make sure the date can be seen and is legible); immunization history, especially tetanus; allergies and chronic conditions; current medications, including authorization for over the counter meds; and, medical insurance info. If you do not have medical insurance, mark “none” so there is no question.
Attach a front and back copy of the medical insurance card.

We need 3 sets of the completed AHMR, including the medical insurance card. If you are going to Philmont, we need 4 sets. Please keep an extra set for yourself, too. If you think of it, please make your copies on both sides of the paper. It saves space and weight, as adult leaders take them with them on scout outings.

NOTE: If you are attending the West Point camporee in May, you only need Parts A and B, which do not have to be dated the same as Part C. A doctor’s physical is not required, which will come into play for those of you that have timing considerations. There are several scouts planning to attend West Point whose forms will expire by then, (or that have already expired).

Please give completed sets to Alison Gabis prior to the expiry of your current medical forms, but not later than June 11, (with few exceptions). There are still spaces left for West Point

Troop 899 has been selected to attend the 53rd annual West Point Camporee on the grounds of the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. The camporee is scheduled for May 1-3, 2015.

If you are interested in attending please contact me ASAP. Right now the troop has 14 scouts and 4 adults signed up to participate. THE EVENT IS LIMITED TO 20 SCOUTS AND 5 ADULTS.

Because of the Camporee requirements and since West Point is approximately a 4 hour drive from Fallston we will be required to depart Fallston no later than mid-morning on Friday May 1. If a scout is interested in attending this event will require that they miss school that Friday. Also the troop will be participating as a “Lightfighter” group as they did last year. This means that all gear, food and personal items will be hiked in and out of the camporee.

Additional information will be sent out in future email blasts and at troop meetings.

NRA Rifle Instructor Course April 17th – 19th

Scouters,
We are offering an NRA Rifle Instructor Course April 17th-19th. This course is required for Scouters who wish to run the ranges at Broadcreek or want to be a Rifle Shooting merit badge counselor. The course is $75 and Scouters can get a $50 discount for a commitment to help at Broadcreek. That makes the course only $25
Free accommodations at Hansen Lodge are available. Send this flyer out to Scouters in your Districts and take copies to roundtable. Please feel free to call me with any questions.

Community Service Opportunity! – Fallston Friends of the Library needs our help with their annual used book sale.

Sat. April 25 10:00 am – 1:00 pm – 5 Scouts needed to move chairs, set up tables and then move boxes of books an outside storage shed to the meeting room. Pizza and drinks provided once work is completed
Sat. May 9 – 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm – 5 Scouts needed to transfer unsold books back into the shed, remove tables and return chairs. Cookies and drinks provided. Please note – this is the same day as the Troop’s mandatory car wash fundraiser. All scouts MUST volunteer 1 shift for the car wash. If you want to volunteer for the Friends, be sure your car wash shift doesn’t conflict with helping the Friends.

NEW SCOUT OUTING CAMPFIRE PROGRAM

What’s an outing without a campfire? And what’s a campfire without a program? If anyone wants to lead and/or participate in the campfire program at New Scout Outing, that’s still possible. Of course this is a requirement for Communications Merit Badge and you could do this to meet a requirement, but it’s also fun and you can do it for the fun of it!!!!! Take a piece of the program, or run with the whole thing. I’ll have lots of skits, cheers and such, and if you have something, bring it along!!!! Please contact Ken Karlic at ken@karlic asap.
