Post for 9/20

Due this Week

Request your blue cards from Ms. Manisha if you are going to the Merit Badge Weekend at Towson University.

Happening This Week

This Thursday’s Troop Meeting is a Court of Honor.

The Merit Badge Weekend at Towson University is this weekend, Sept. 23 – 24.

This event isn’t a Troop sponsored event and won’t be coordinated or staffed by Troop 899 leadership. So the scouts attending will be assigned to a provisional troop and responsible to follow the below participant guide. Scouts and any adult volunteers are responsible to bring copies of their Medical Forms A&B to the event. Below is the link for the merit badge prerequisites for the scouts registered to participate.

FYI, Julie Lefkowitz will be attending as a general volunteer and would love some company.  If any other adults are interested in volunteering, the only BSA training requirement is youth protection. Registration is available on-line.

Shred Day: Important Information for Scouts & Parents

Our SHRED DAY Fundraiser is in 2 weeks – Sat. Sept. 30 (9am to 12pm).  PLEASE take a few minutes to email the attached flyer to friends, family members and co-workers, and to post it on your Facebook or other social media sites.  Signs promoting the event will go up soon, but word-of-mouth is the best promotion.

Also, we’ll need scouts to work the event.  Please email me if you are able to work at the SHRED DAY.

Christmas Wreath Fundraiser is On!

It’s time to start selling those Christmas wreaths. These high quality wreaths come ready to hang, and last for an amazingly long time. This has been one of our favorite fundraisers over the past years. Keep in mind that a portion of what you sell comes back to the Troop to offset the cost of camping weekends and the equipment that is needed to have a great time. The sale begins 09/21/17 and runs until October 26th. I’ll have the information and order forms at this week’s troop meeting. Check out the attached flyer for further details.

Hard to Get Merit Badges

Troop 899,

I came across this merit badge opportunity in Newark, Delaware that you may be interested in. Throughout the rest of the winter and spring, Iron Hill Museum is hosting a Merit Badge Center. They are offering a wide variety of merit badges, many of which are hard to do without special materials or facilities. The merit badges are taught by professors from the University of Delaware’s Academy of Science and use the extensive campus resources. Below is the link to their merit badge schedule, and I encourage you to take a look. I am signed up for this Saturday’s Robotics MB class and welcome anyone to join me.

Come On Down, For The New Cooking Merit Badge

Until December 31, 2014, Scouts starting Cooking merit badge may use these requirements, or the previous requirements which these replaced.

This is an exception to the general rule. Normally, Scouts starting a merit badge after new requirements are issued must use only the new requirements. The following is a paraphrase of the announcement made by the BSA Advancement Team Leader in October, 2013:

Since the new Cooking MB requirements were released on December 17, 2013, and the pamphlet is coming out after the start of the new year, BSA decided to allow Scouts all of 2014 to make the transition. BSA will treat this as if the pamphlet and new requirements will have come out after January, which would make the requirements effective Jan 1, 2015. Throughout 2014 Scouts will have those options of continuing or beginning with the old requirements or beginning with the new requirements. Then on Jan 1, 2015, any Scout beginning work on Cooking MB must use the new requirements and the new pamphlet.

Merit Badge Counselor Training

We are looking for more adults to be willing to become merit badge counselors. Please take a look at the over 100 merit badges that are available and see what aligns with your occupation, hobbies or interests. Everyone should be able to find at least 1 or 2. For those of you that think they might be interested in becoming a merit badge counselor but aren’t sure what to do or for those who are on the fence Troop 899 will be holding a merit badge counselor training on Thursday Dec 5 at 7:30 (concurrent with the troop meeting). Please contact Sharon Gardner with any questions.
